Learning and homework support club
Implement a learning and homework support club for all, every day after school. This could be in public libraries or in schools. Parents, older siblings and people in the community could volunteer to supervise and help out. As well as improving academic outcomes, this would also help to bring the community together and by extension potentially reduce mental health problems and loneliness. This club would be for primary school students once a week on Friday and 4 days a week (except Friday) for secondary school pupils.
Why the contribution is important
Many children, especially those whose parents are not equipped to help them with their homework struggle. These children are in need of extra support with their learning, as well as their homework. While teachers intervening in schools to help students who are struggling is helpful, it is not always enough as they have very limited 1 to 1 time with the students. This is primarily due to the low ratio of teachers to pupils. Having a drop-in after school club for homework and learning enables children to feel empowered to seek support with it and to not feel judged by their teachers. Also, by actively seeking support for their own learning, this strategy would enable the students to take responsibility their own education. This would also help children to feel part of a community and to realise people care.
